Sphinx Kicked To The Kerb
by Kev Monks
Kirby Muxloe 4 v 0 Coventry Sphinx
Coventry Sphinx were well beaten at Kirby Muxloe this afternoon.
Kirby, who had lost 2-1 at Sphinx Drive earlier in the season
and are a side expected to be challenging for the Midland
Alliance League title ,took the lead in the eleventh minute when
a long ball from the right by Tom Hill was flicked past Carl
O'Neill by Stuart Verrall.
Sphinx, with Josh Ruff back in the side, won two corners in the
20th minute before Jamie McAteer got his head to a free kick and
beat the advancing keeper but the ball went wide of the far
post.
Verrall rattled the bar at the other end in a game that was
becoming littered with free kicks, one of which Hill curled wide
from on the half hour mark.
Ruff also had an effort on goal with a free kick but in the 38th
minute, Kirby hit a second goal when a cross from the right was
not dealt with and Lee Barratt drove home with a low shot
from the edge of the area.
Jack Edwards had a shot saved right at the start of the second half but ten minutes in, Kirby attacked down the left and Lee Barratt was at the far post to bundle the ball and O'Neill into the net for Kirby’s third.
Danny McSheffrey went for a double change as the referee continued to wave the cards in what not a dirty game in the slightest but in the 68th minute, Kirby hit a fourth when Karl Wilson scored from inside the edge of the area to wrap up a 4-0 win.
