Dour Sphinx Lose 6 Pointer...

by Randy Forder.

Coventry Sphinx 1 v 2  Highgate United

Its not often in a game when you get given lifelines to take advantage of but this is what Sphinx failed to do in a 2-1 home defeat against fellow relegation battlers Highgate.

For 30 minutes Sphinx controlled the game and should of been a goal up after 15 minutes when Cutting and White got in each others way and skied the ball over. Ashley Jackson had a week shot saved and Edmond just couldn't connect with a header from a cutting cross with the goal begging. All was to change on 30 minutes when Ritson lost his man who cross shot was put in at the far post by Dan Povey. 5 minutes later another move down Sphinx right hand side led to Daniel Pitt having an easy tap in so within 5 minutes Sphinx had gone from controlling the game to being out of it but there were some lifelines

Lifeline 1 on the stroke of half time Highgate failed to clear a Hill cross into the box and Cutting was on hand to tap in.

Sphinx again started the second half the better and on 53 minutes lifeline 2 came when Highgate had a player sent off for retaliation but Sphinx failed to take advantage and even conjured up a penalty for Highgate again a lifeline was given when Pitt took hat was probably the worse penalty ever seen at Sphinx drive when he drove his penalty 5 yards wide and 5yards over the bar.

Sphinx failed to take advantage and were poor in there decision making a ball retention. If Sphinx are going to survive in the Alliance then they need to show alot more composure and courage over the coming weeks with 24 points in the bag another 20 over the next 15 games could see them to safety with a goal difference of -22 that to could come into play.
