Sphinx let lead slip.....
by Kev Monks.
Boldmere St. Michael's 3 v 2 Coventry Sphinx
Coventry Sphinx threw away a golden chance of a rare victory at
Boldmere St Michaels when they let in three goals in the second
half.
Danny McSheffrey changed his side from the team that had lost at
Causeway on Saturday and it looked to have done the trick as a
stunning 25 yard drive from Luke Hopkins flew into the net to
put Sphinx a goal up.
Two minutes later, there was a second goal for the Sphinx
support when Arron Donaldson started and finished a move. The
winger played a neat ball to Kelvin Phillips and got it back
before racing into the area and hammering a low drive into the
corner of the net.
Phillips headed wide before on the stroke of half time, a Luke
Hopkins shot was blocked by the hand of a Boldmere defender but
only a corner was given.
Sphinx did not need the half-time as within five minutes of the
second half, Stuart Capaldi sent a deflected shot past Simon
Holland.
The attacks on goal for Sphinx dried up and the play was all up
the other end as Capaldi had another deflected effort cleared
for a corner and Simeon Tullough sent a 28 yard piledriver just
over.
In the 71st minute, the Sphinx support, management and players
were fuming that a blatant handball by Capaldi was not given.
The striker had a shot saved by the feet of Holland and Tom Law
was first to react to the loose ball to draw the home side
level.
Five minutes later and Sphinx were condemned to their fourth
league defeat of the season thanks a stunning Jamie Petty shot
from twenty yards flew into the net.
On Saturday, Sphinx are at home to Sutton Coldfield Town in the
FA Cup. Kick off is at 3pm and admission is £5 for adults and
£2.50 concessions with U14's free.
