Here Come The Girls.....

6th September 2011

The spunkerette's first league game of the season was eagerly anticipated after a fine pre-season and the girls were quick out of the blocks and were putting Redditch under a lot of pressure from early on and dominated the first twenty minutes with Redditch rarely getting out of their half, however on a day when Kaya was firing more blanks than Lyntos. Sphinx needed a little luck and it came in the shape of an own goal as Jo 'Duracell' Ryan pressurised the Redditch centre half to put the ball past her own goalkeeper.   Sphinx continued to dominate and with the defence  having little to do and the midfield spraying passes round, Redditch were being run ragged.

Sphinx increased there lead further from another well worked set play and a fine ball from Billy saw the Beast rise like a salmon to power past a helpless Redditch keeper great goal Shannon.  With the movement of the front two and great wing play from the Meerkat and Billy it was only a matter of time before another goal went in and a great cross was met by Jo and with Catherine 'Gazza' Smith making sure the ball had crossed the line a decision on whose goal it was is being discussed by the dubious goals panel and will be decided by Mick 'Kamara' Callender in the clubhouse on Tuesday.  H/T 3 - 0

Although not performing up to their pre-season standards Sphinx had to be happy with the amount of chances created in the first half and were given a little pep talk at half time to up their game.  However Sphinx seem to take their foot off the gas (not sure if down to price of petrol these days) and let Redditch back into the game who seemed determined not to be rolled over and all credit to them gave it a real go. The sphinx defence were now being tested but led by Sam 'The Rock' Smyth and Shannon 'The Beast' Middleton they were rarely given a chance on goal and Gemma' Lord Lucan' Voce rarely had a shot to save until mid way through the second half where Sphinx conceded a very sloppy goal. Changes were made and Fatpants Harris was introduced to the affray to bring added pace and Becky 'The Boy' Wood to tighten things up and with the hard working Sarah 'shinpads' Egan providing fresh legs up front Sphinx finished seen the game out comfortably. F/T 3-1

Speaking to manager John 'Greybrows' Cook after he was disappointed with the level of performance but was happy to start the campaign with a win and added Redditch Utd were a credit with their never say die attitude.  Next game Sunday 11th September  at Sphinx 2.00pm k off v's W.M. Police Ladies F.C. come down and support the ladies free entrance.
